Engineering is the use of mathematical and scientific methods to design, construct, or operate structures, machines, or other systems. Engineering is a broad discipline that includes a number of more specialized engineering fields. Each field has a different emphasis and type of application. There are many types of engineering applications, including electrical, mechanical, civil, environmental, and chemical. Just to name a few. My engineering focus will be on civil.

Engineering has been a part of human history since the dawn of time. Civil engineering dates back to ancient Egypt (4000 BC), the Indus Valley Civilization (2000 BC), and Mesopotamia. It was then that humans began to leave their nomadic lifestyle and built shelters. In Egypt, the first large-scale structure constructions occurred with the building of pyramids around 2700-2500 BC. Another example of an ancient civil engineering construction is the Parthenon in Ancient Greece by Iktinos (447-438 BC), The Appian way by Roman engineers (312 BC), and China’s Great Wall.

Civil Engineering Professional

Civil engineering can be considered the oldest branch in engineering. Civil engineers are responsible for planning and supervising construction projects like roads, bridges or tunnels. In order to construct different types of buildings, they also work with architects. Another area of civil engineering is highways. Civil engineers aim to create structures that are durable, efficient, and functional. The majority of civil engineering projects have an environmental impact. Civil engineers use their knowledge to design structures that aren’t harmful.

Future of Civil Engineering

Civil engineering is a profession that has exceptional potential to make a positive change and preserve the environment. These are the exact actions that make civil engineer a unique and important profession. There are many projects that have been done around the world and are recognized as the most sustainable in 21st-century building. They have achieved the success in every project, thanks to their careful design, development, material use, and construction. They are both environmentally and economically responsible.

It is difficult to design sustainability. Design sustainability should be considered from the initial design concept through to the final demolition. Sustainable construction, on the other hand, must not use natural materials or materials that are harmful to the environment. It also requires less energy to reduce waste and pollution and maintain the project’s quality. For projects to have a positive environmental impact, they must incorporate sustainable planning, thinking and acting throughout the design process. This is how a group of ideas can be developed to improve quality of life.

Projects have been driven mainly by the economic aspect of sustainability. Civil engineering must consider sustainability issues beyond the present. It is crucial to consider the cost of the entire life cycle as well as the effect on future development. These costs should be considered together with the environmental and social impacts.
